#pm_ngt-002 – “Old thinking” has powerful tools but it lacks the mindset and vocabulary to model benefits, handle people’s emotional reaction to change or actively ensure achievement of benefits.

Benefit assessment is a much harder topic than cost determination; benefits defy the easy and simple reduction to money that project cost baselines submit to. Benefits are about strategy, they are partially numeric and wholly subjective. Old thinking doesn’t express or deliver the investor’s benefits but new thinking does.

When mishandled change results in loss. People are psychologically repelled by the thought of loss with more force than they are attracted to gains of equivalent magnitude. New generation thinking adds mindset, techniques and concern for people to the existing dispassionate toolset that is limited to tools to identify work, estimate resource consumption and plot the out-flow of staff and material costs over time.
